Tootsie – Rolls, Pops, Frooties – candies cherished and relished by so many of us, from kids to teenagers, from grown-ups to seniors with a sweet tooth.

So, what are Tootsie Rolls?

Tootsie Rolls is a chewy chocolate candy. Each piece, in their original size, is 23.33 calories and weighs about 6.5 grams. It all began in 1896, when Leo Hirshfield, an immigrant from Austria, opened a small candy shop in New York City. His goal was to make a chocolate that was not going to melt easily when exposed to heat. He came up with tootsie, named after his daughter Clara "Tootsie" Hirshfield.

During World War II, Tootsie Rolls were commonly found in American soldiers rations because of its hardiness.

Flavors of tootsie rolls include, chocolate, cherry, orange, lime, vanilla, lemon, strawberry, raspberry, grape, apple, banana-berry, fruit punch, pink lemonade, root beer, cran-blueberry, and watermelon.

How about Tootsie Pops?

Tootsie Pops are hard candy lollipops filled with chocolate-flavored chewy Tootsie Roll.

Tootsie Pop was born in 1931, and was popular during the Depression because of its low price. In addition to chocolate (the original flavor), Tootsie Pops traditionally have only come in five original flavors - cherry, raspberry, orange, and grape flavor.

In its 109th year, Tootsie Roll Industries is one of the biggest candy makers in the world.

They produce more than sixty million Tootsie Rolls per day, and twenty million Tootsie Pops.

Tootsie candies are gluten, nut and peanut-free, making them a safe treat for people with allergies.

Each year, the company claims to receive over 20,000 letters from children. The topic is - how many licks it takes to get to the 'tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop'.

The findings: on average, it seems that it takes around 600-800, and that’s if you can resist biting into the candy – which a lot of us find it hard to do!

Maybe children do it faster, but a student study at the University of Cambridge concluded that it takes 3,481 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.
